Hachette UK: The Author Mural

In 2015, Hachette UK’s 9 publishing houses came together under one roof for the first time in fabulous new riverside offices on Victoria Embankment, London.

Many of these companies have long and distinguished publishing histories dating back to the foundation of John Murray in 1768.

Our brief was to bring this heritage in to the new space in a cohesive way, whilst also respecting the independent spirit of individual publishers within the group.

We researched and compiled a list of prominent authors published by houses that are now part of Hachette UK from 1768 to the present day, ordered chronologically by decade.

In celebration of the art of writing, we commissioned hand lettering artist and illustrator, Kate Forrester, to write the author names in a style referencing the Thameside location of the new space.

The spectacular views from the offices over the river inspired us to create a loose, flowing mural, in stark contrast to the hard lines of the interior architecture.

Each name is colour coded to the publishing house who first published them, giving each company within the group its own identity within a cohesive whole.

New authors names will be added every year, making the mural a living and growing homage to Hachette and its writers.

"This stunning mural, running right through our building, demonstrates our pride in our authors and in our history. The Graphic History Company has created a magical way to tell our story.

The production of the mural was a mammoth undertaking but working with The Graphic History Company and with Kate Forrester, the artist, was a joy.

They understood our unique requirements and the result is a work of art that not only represents who we are but is the crowning glory in our beautiful building."
